Summary: Alabama A&M University’s Forestry, Ecology, and Wildlife Program invites applications, especially from women and underrepresented groups, for the position of Assistant Professor of Forest Ecosystems. This is a nine-month appointment tenure track half academic half research with additional three-month summer research employment. Initial research funding will be available. We seek a candidate committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, hands-on field-based teaching, and developing a nationally recognized extramurally-funded research program involving graduate and undergraduate students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1) Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on forest ecosystems protection, forest fire ecology, and other forestry-related courses. 2) Securing external research funding and conducting scholarly research in the candidate’s area of expertise with preference given to fields such as restoration of fire-adapted forest ecosystems, wildfire science, and forest protection 3) Providing service to the department, university, professional societies, and communities by working on committees, advising undergraduate students, participating in recruitment activities, engaging stakeholders, mentoring master and doctoral students, and serving in professional societies.
Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.): 1) Ph.D. in forestry, ecology, forest fire ecology, natural resources, botany, entomology, or a closely related discipline, emphasizing field-based terrestrial ecology and forest ecosystems management. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: We seek a candidate committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, hands-on field-based teaching, and developing a nationally recognized extramurally-funded research program involving graduate and undergraduate students. Additional preferred skills and abilities include: 1) Experience of or graduated from a SAF (Society of American Foresters) accredited program 2) College or university teaching or teaching assistant experience 3) Ability to develop a field-based research program in forest ecosystems management, as evidenced by a record such as prior experience and publications in peer-reviewed journals 4) Be able to obtain the Prescribed Burn Manager certificate within one year 5) History of success in securing external research funding 6) Commitment to promoting student diversity and inclusion 7) Ability to collaborate with other faculty in interdisciplinary projects and engage in outreach to landowners, managers, and other stakeholders
