Position Description
The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, Washington, invites applications for one full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor (100% FTE, 9-month appointments) working in the area of Sustainable Bioresource Engineering. The position is anticipated to start in September 2024, negotiable within reasonable bounds. We aim to add to a diverse and inclusive faculty within SEFS whose research, teaching, and service enable them to contribute to our commitment to the engagement and inclusion of culturally diverse audiences in higher education, particularly in the areas of bioresource engineering and climate change.
The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences seeks a faculty member in bioresource engineering to contribute to our vision of inspiring and providing equitable solutions to pressing sustainability challenges. Postivie factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, successful research emphasizing green manufacturing and innovation for a circular economy. This position will be expected to support the school's commitment to research and teaching excellence in chemical, materials, or environmental engineering and their intersections with environmental sustainability and bio-resources. The successful candidate will be expected to share our commitment to working actively to advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in SEFS and in the professions within which we work.
Responsibilites:
All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Selected scholars will be expected to establish and maintain an active agenda of scholarly pursuits, including externally supported research and creative and professionally-associated practice. The candidate will be expected to teach core engineering courses in the ABET-accredited Bioresource Science and Engineering undergraduate curriculum, including material and energy balances, transport phenomena, process control, and process design.
The successful candidate will develop and maintain a vigorous research program in bioresource engineering, secure extramural funding, direct research activities, and mentor PhD and MS students in engineering for sustainability appropriate to their disciplinary expertise and interdisciplinary collaborations. This position will be expected to advise and teach a diverse student body with respect to socioeconomic status, culture, academic interests, and career paths, and to work collaboratively and across disciplines.
This position will work on creative and adaptive solutions to the multi-dimensional challenges of developing a sustainable bioeconomy through collaborative and convergent research, teaching, and service in alignment with the SEFS mission and vision.
Compensation:
Salary Range is $94,500 - $112,500 (per the 9-month appointment). Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance, a relocation incentive, and/or limited commitment of summer salary in the first year.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in SEFS' ABET-accredited undergraduate program in Bioresource Science and Engineering (BSE). The BSE program provides education to support a robust and sustainable bioeconomy. Faculty who teach in the program also conduct cutting-edge research and outreach activities that span everything from growing biomass for both water treatment and biorefinery feedstock to nano cellulose-based sensors and outreach with rural communities and tribes to develop their bioeconomy capacities. Colleagues in SEFS provide access to collaborators with expertise in economics, ecology, geospatial sciences, and plant sciences.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in an appropriate engineering discipline, including Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, Bio-resource Engineering, or other relevant field. Possible specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to: process intensification, reaction engineering, renewable energy, surface and colloid chemistry, green polymer chemistry, and separation processes. Applicants must demonstrate experience with and/or potential for an academic career at a national/international level with an active program of research, teaching, and work related to outreach and community engagement.

- A teaching statement of no more than 600 words describing your teaching philosophy.
- A statement of no more than 600 words describing your commitments to DEI, outreach, and community engagement as they relate to your research, teaching, service, and mentoring, as well as improving access to higher education for underrepresented individuals or groups.
