POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in applied wildlife habitat and/or population management at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with outreach, instruction, and university and professional service expectations as part of a 9-month appointment. Successful candidates will be expected to establish interdisciplinary collaborations in outreach, teaching, and research with faculty in the Warnell School and across campus. Individuals with expertise in the following academic areas relative to applied wildlife habitat and/or population management are encouraged to apply: wildlife ecology, conservation, management, or a closely related natural resources discipline.
Outreach responsibilities (approximately 50%) should be satisfied through three general functions: (1) instruction and training of Extension professionals, key stakeholder groups, undergraduate and graduate students, (2) applied research which addresses applied wildlife habitat management-related needs, and (3) consultation and technical assistance with state and federal agencies, county extension, and private industry, as appropriate. The successful candidate will develop an instruction and training program to deliver science-based, applied wildlife habitat and/or population management information to individuals and organizations statewide and nationally. Applied research responsibilities include development of an extramurally funded, nationally/internationally recognized outreach and research program in wildlife habitat and population management. Consultation and technical assistance will be defined as providing specialized knowledge to stakeholders within the scope of the Warnell School mission. The successful candidate will interact with and advise private landowners, industry professionals, state and federal agencies, and Extension professionals. To fulfill the teaching appointment (approximately 45%), the successful candidate will advise undergraduate and graduate students and teach courses in applied wildlife management dependent as well as a capstone senior project course where students facilitate wildlife and land management decisions for diverse stakeholders. Coursework delivery will be in a combination of in-person, hybrid, and/or online. Professional service includes serving on School/University committees and actively participating in professional/scientific societies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required.—Candidates must possess a Ph.D. before August 2025 with an emphasis on wildlife ecology, conservation, management, or a closely related natural resources discipline. Candidates must demonstrate clear evidence of scholarship through peer-reviewed publications and/or technical publications, and the ability to attract extramural funding. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for outreach productivity and should have interest in: extension education; conducting and reporting applied research; and non-traditional or online instruction. The person must also demonstrate potential and willingness to work closely with public land management partners, private landowners, Extension professionals, and other constituent groups, and be able to successfully mentor students. Preferred.— Candidates who have the potential to use modern, innovative extension/outreach tools. Candidates who can integrate science and stakeholder values to guide natural resource decisions are sought. Candidates whose applied research affects habitat management decisions at large spatial scales.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Appointment to Associate Professor requires a record consistent with promotion to Associate Professor at the Warnell School such as strong evidence of emerging stature as a regional/national authority, acquiring and administering external funding, ability to produce and communicate research, and excellence in teaching and working with students. Service at the Associate Professor level for 1-2 years is preferred for this rank.
