Description:
The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) at Oklahoma State University (OSU) invites applications for a full-time, eleven-month, tenure-track position (70% teaching and 30% extension) in forest ecology and management. Oklahoma is an ecologically diverse state and forestlands provide significant ecosystem services to a large number of forest landowners. At Oklahoma State, our students in the Forest Ecology and Management option learn science-based management and conservation of forested ecosystems and related natural resources. Students gain the skills that are necessary for the measurement, assessment, and valuation of natural resources and the evaluation of management strategies for forests and related wildlands. The Forestry Ecology and Management option is accredited by the Society of American Foresters (SAF).
We are seeking a candidate who can contribute to teaching related to ‘SAF Required Areas of Study’ that may include but are not limited to classes in introductory forestry, wood products and harvesting, recreational uses of forest resources, and forest/natural resource ecology. The successful candidate may also teach a graduate level course in their area of expertise. Specific instructional assignments depend upon the candidate's expertise and the needs of the department. In addition, the candidate is expected to advise and provide mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students in the department. Participation and presentation in teaching-oriented seminars/workshops and peer-reviewed publications in pedagogical journals is desired. The successful candidate is also expected to develop a nationally recognized, science-based forest Extension program that enhances the knowledge base of forest landowners and other clientele. The faculty member will work closely with multidisciplinary faculty in the department and division, county Extension personnel, forest landowner associations, state and federal agencies, Southern Regional Extension Forestry (SREF), and other organizations within and beyond Oklahoma. As a forest Extension Specialist, the faculty member will develop an outreach program that serves forest landowners, the timber industry, natural resources professionals, and the general public through short courses, popular articles, Extension bulletins, workshops, field days, applied research articles and media. The faculty member is expected to seek appropriate extramural funding and collaborations to support these efforts.
The department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management is comprised of 22 faculty with expertise in fisheries, forest, rangeland, and wildlife resources, plus 12 administrative and research support staff. Approximately 40-50 masters and doctoral graduate students are advised by NREM faculty, and we serve over 260 undergraduate students. The Department is also the administrative home of the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. The candidate will be expected to serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
